Be the Coach You Want to Be: Topics and Learning Outcomes for the 9 Sessions
Session 1: Ask Rather than Tell to Create Safe Space for Learning
Learning Outcomes: Participants will recognize the value of Asking rather than Telling as a coach and be better able to use inquiry to engage others in thinking and trying new behaviors to promote their development
Session 2: Use Open Rather Than Closed Questions *
Learning Outcomes: Participants will understand why and how Open Questions prompt more awareness and thinking than Closed (Yes/No) Questions and be better able to use Open Questions effectively in their coaching
Session 3: Show Respect by Actually Listening *
Learning Outcomes: Participants will understand Listening is essential to engaging learners in their development and be better able to show respect by Listening attentively and acknowledging what they hear
Session 4: Focus on the Person, Not Their Problem *
Learning Outcomes: Participants will recognize that connecting with a coachee as a person is key to supporting their development and learn to avoid “helping” them solve their problem or situation with leading questions and suggestions unless specifically asked.
Session 5: Open Questioning Adds to Grasp of Facts in Situations in Coaching *
Learning Outcomes: Participants will recognize the human tendency of both coach and learner to jump to conclusions and solutions based on first impressions and assumptions and be better able to use open inquiry to explore the facts and actual conditions of problems and situations
Session 6: Inquiry and Listening Adds to Understanding of the Other’s Capabilities and Thinking
Learning Outcome: Participants will recognize the importance of assessing a coachee’s knowledge and skills before deciding whether to teach, correct or coach and be better able to use open inquiry and attentive listening to get a sense of their current capabilities and thinking
Session 7: Open Inquiry Prompts Questioning of Initial Impressions and Assumptions *
Learning Outcome: Participants will realize the need to help learners slow down the rush to conclusions and judgments and be better able to use open questioning and listening to prompt awareness, recall, checking of assumptions and deeper thinking
Session 8: Open Inquiry Prompts Reflection and Support Self-directed Learning *
Learning Outcomes: Participants will recognize the importance of learners being responsible for their own development and be better able to use open questioning and listening to prompt them to reflect on their experiences and draw lessons from them for themselves
Session 9: Pull Together Your Development and Keep It Going
Learning Outcomes: Participants will recognize the role of self-awareness in development of the coach as well as the coachee. We will experience the impact of self-reflection and designed experiments on the consolidation of new skills and behaviors. We will also focus on gaining clarity on aspirations, recognizing underlying assumptions that are obstacles and leaning into existing habits to develop new ones.
* Coaching sessions follow approximately two weeks after the learning session [calls have three people plus your coach].
